The Giome Concept
GIOME is a completely new concept in gastroenterology based on the human Physiome project originally proposed by James Bassingthwaighte in 1995. The purpose of the GIOME project is to facilitate integrative modeling of physiological and pathophysiological processes in the gastrointestinal tract and sharing of data, ideas and designs generated by gastroenterologists worldwide. The vision and end goal is to improve life for patients with gastrointestinal disorders. The project attempts to model interactions between genes, cells, tissues and gastrointestinal organs in health and disease.
The mission of GIOME is to support a database for storing physiological and pathophysiological data and ideas generated by gastroenterologists and scientists from all over the world. Since others than the person who obtained the data usually do not have access to the data, the outcome of many projects are limited to the conception of one or few minds. Far too often useless research is published because the experimentalist did not have a conceptual model or the theoretician did not consider the experimental problems and the biological variation. Furthermore, many meetings are so large and abstract accepted almost without critique so the valuable scientific debate on the most important issues dies. The database and the environment created by GIOME will facilitate unprecedented collaboration within the gastroenterology research community and multidisciplinary approaches with participation of experimentalists and theoreticians. GIOME will provide a centralised source of knowledge and information that can easily be shared. Complicated models can be built up in collaboration for the benefit of mankind.
GIOME is a non-profit organisation with a professional and scientific management and board of governors. Most services are free but GIOME is dependent on donations. If you would like to support GIOME, please contact donations@giome.com. GIOME is also dependent on revenue from advertisements. Furthermore, GIOME has set up accreditation standards for experimental and clinical laboratories and offers accreditation of your laboratory. However, development of accreditation standards has been costly and visits to laboratories are time-consuming and with expenses for travel and hotels. For this reason accreditation must be paid for.
